Semi-aniline leather combines a dyed appearance with some surface protection. The amount and type of coating varies. The name is useful, but it is not a promise that a particular cleaner or repair system will be safe.

What to look for

Natural grain and variation may remain visible beneath a light colour layer. The surface can look more even than aniline leather without the heavily uniform appearance of some pigmented finishes. Furniture labels and the manufacturer's specification are more dependable than a photograph.

Moisture behaviour is only a clue. A worn topcoat, previous protector or greasy patch can change how quickly a drop is absorbed. Do not identify the material from that observation alone. Skip water testing on a valuable or unfamiliar piece.

Start with the least intervention

Dust with a soft cloth or a suitable soft brush attachment. Blot a fresh spill promptly with a clean absorbent cloth and avoid rubbing it across the surface. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions.

If a cleaner is permitted, test on an inconspicuous area and allow it to dry. Check for altered sheen as well as colour. A surface can look acceptable while wet and reveal a pale or dark patch once it dries.

Treat wear differently from dirt

A faded armrest may have lost part of its light finish. Extra cleaning can make the contrast worse. Likewise, a greasy headrest may need a specialist treatment rather than ordinary surface cleaning.

Do not assume filler or opaque colourant will preserve the natural look. Covering one area with a pigmented repair can produce a mismatch in transparency and texture. A restorer may need to assess the whole panel.

Choose the next step

For an intact, coated finish, read our sofa cleaning routine and check it against the maker's instructions. If the leather readily absorbs moisture, the aniline care guide explains why a more cautious approach is appropriate.

A care label, overview photo and close-up of the affected panel help us assess a question. Include any products already used: a previous treatment can change the behaviour of the finish.
