A peeling sofa is not always dried-out leather. Bonded leather products can contain reconstituted leather fibres and a backing beneath a surface coating. Synthetic materials can also peel. The construction matters because a loose coating is a poor foundation for a durable repair.
Inspect the edge of the damage
Look at an existing loose edge without pulling more material away. Fabric or a uniform backing beneath a thin surface film can indicate a coated composite or synthetic material. Check the label for bonded leather, PU, vinyl or a manufacturer-specific description.
Genuine leather can also suffer finish failure. Do not identify the material solely from the fact that it is peeling.
Why conditioner does not solve peeling
Conditioner cannot reattach a coating that is separating from its backing. Oils can also interfere with the bond of a later repair coating. If flakes continue to come off during ordinary use, the unstable layer needs to be considered before any colour touch-up.
Likewise, a dye does not replace the missing film. Filler might hide a small defect temporarily, but it cannot make the surrounding coating sound.
Assess a cosmetic repair realistically
A small low-stress area may be a candidate for a compatible cosmetic treatment. A large seat panel that flexes every day is a much tougher case. The patch may differ in grain, gloss and softness, and adjacent areas can continue to fail.
Ask a repairer whether the plan addresses only the appearance or also the cause. Ask what may happen at the edges of the repaired area and whether the cost includes a finish matched across the panel.
Compare the alternatives
Reupholstering a sound frame, replacing a removable panel or using a suitable fitted cover may offer better value than repeated spot repairs. Compare the whole cost and expected use, not just the price of a kit.
Do not remove loose material from a wide area until you have chosen a plan. That makes it harder to return to a less invasive option.
Get the material right first
The leather type overview explains the main clues. If the surface is sound coated leather with a rubbed-through colour layer, the colour restoration guide addresses a different, potentially more manageable problem.
For a second opinion, send the label, an overview and a close-up of a loose edge. No photo alone can guarantee how long a cosmetic repair will last.
