Aniline leather shows natural variation because its colour is largely within the hide rather than hidden by an opaque pigment layer. It may have little surface protection, though finishes differ. That character makes stains and changes in tone more visible.

The safest first step is to identify the item from the manufacturer's label or specification. A photograph alone cannot confirm the finish.

Patina or a problem?

Gradual changes from use and light exposure are often described as patina. A sudden spill, a dark oily patch or a sharply defined water ring is a different issue. Decide what changed, when it changed and whether a previous treatment is involved before choosing a cleaner.

Trying to make all areas perfectly uniform can remove the natural character that attracted you to the leather.

Everyday care

Dust gently with a clean soft cloth. Keep the item away from direct heat and reduce prolonged strong sunlight when practical. Follow the maker's instructions for any protective product and test it where a colour change will not be conspicuous.

Do not use an ordinary smooth-leather cream just because the surface is smooth. Absorbent leather can darken permanently with oils, waxes or an incompatible conditioner.

After a spill

Blot promptly with an absorbent white cloth. Do not scrub or spread the spill. Let the item dry naturally. Photograph the area after drying and record what was spilled.

Avoid pouring water over a stain or repeatedly wetting its edges. Local cleaning can create a larger tide mark. A specialist may treat a complete panel, but that is not a reason to soak a panel yourself.

Water marks and oil stains

There is no universally reliable home remedy. A product suitable for one aniline hide may change the colour of another. Geist's water-mark guidance describes why these stains need a specific treatment.

Do not assume a stain is permanent from a photograph, and do not assume that removing it is risk-free. A restorer can weigh the chances of improvement against a change in the overall appearance.
